Microsoft turns 46: a glimpse into the key milestones of software giant


Microsoft completes 46 years in the market on April 5 offering influential software services in the personal computing industry. In 1975, Microsoft put the first foot forward and now has become one of the successful tech giants that are ruling the market with $1 trillion capitalisations. 

The operating system tech giant is a household name in the market with people recognising Microsoft with the logo. However, over 46 years, Microsoft has come up with the major milestones for which the giant is well-known. Be it the technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, manufacturing, etc. 

Here is a snapshot of the key milestones of Microsoft: 

1. 1975-1981 - On April 4, 1975, Bill Gates and Paul Allen established Micro-soft in Albuquerque, New Mexico, US. In Jan 1979, the company moved to Bellevue and on June 25, 1981, Microsoft incorporated. IBM incorporates MS-DOS 1.0 (Microsoft 16-bit operating system) in personal computers. 

2. 1982-1991 - Microsoft moves to Redmond and the stock goes public in 1986. In 1989, the company introduced the Office suite for productivity along with Windows 3.0. 

3. 1992-2001 - Microsoft introduces Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows 2000 during this period. In 2000, Steve Ballmer took the position of Chief Executive Officer and President of Microsoft. The tech giant also introduced Office XP, Windows XP, and Xbox in 2001. 

4. 2002-2011 - Microsoft launches Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Office System, Xbox 360, Windows Vista, Microsoft Office System 2007, Windows Server 2008, Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server 2008, Bing decision engine, Windows 7, Office 2010, Windows Phone 7, along with Office 365. The tech giant also acquires Skype while announcing the availability of Microsoft Lync. 

5.2012-2021- decade started with the acquisition of Yammer. After that, the tech giant introduces Visual Server 2012, Visual Studio 2012, a new Xbox entertainment experience, Microsoft Surface, Windows 8, Office 2013, Outlook.com, Windows 8.1, Surface 2, and Surface Pro 2 along with several new additions. The company also acquires Nokia’s device and services business. 

Microsoft also announces the new Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella and the departure of Gates as the board of directors. From the start of Microsoft Cloud to forming a Research Group, conversational speech recognition to Mixed Reality Headsets, acquiring ZeniMax Media and Bethesda Softworks to Azure Space introduction is all set up during this decade.
