5 Known threats to mobile security that every app developer should know

The increase in mobile usage has led to a sizeable number of security issues. It is important for enterprises and consumers to be aware of these issues in order to avoid them. Here are known threats related to mobile security.

1. Increased device usage sparks surge in malware

Banking malware is a common threat to mobile technologies. The risk is even more as fraudsters are leveraging fear and uncertainty around Covid-19 pandemic to trick victims. Mobile banking malware has surged over the last few months. Most of these attacks are focused on stealing personal information and using weak remote connections to get access to the target device.

2. Sacrificing software quality and security

Securing the infrastructure of technologies powering mobile is a tedious task for app developers. No platform or device can be secured following the same way. Developers constantly have to implement unique security strategies to reduce fraudulent activity.

3. Vulnerable digital security protocols

A lack of digital security protocols like secure sockets layer (SSL) and transport layer security (TSL) make mobile banking apps difficult to penetrate. If the current ecosystem continues to grow at the same rate, it will be difficult to avoid fixing a broken system using the same protocols.

4. Mobile device identification

The only way other entities in the ecosystem can recognise a unique device is through device fingerprints. The combination of unique attributes of a device such as operating system, type and version of web browser, and device IP address defines the device identification. Having a weak device identification makes the whole system ineffective.

5. Lack of regulation and standards

Despite being one of the most widely used and large-sized ecosystems, the industry lacks regulation and standards. There is not enough guidance on the authentication and identification of mobile devices. With new mobile malware disrupting the market every week, security standards should be top priority for regulators.
